Rutland Water provides plenty of opportunities for walking, cycling, bird watching and nature. Visit the Nature Reserve at Lyndon, 5 minutes away by car, take a trip on the Rutland Belle and see the countryside from the Water. Hire a bike from Normanton Cycle Hire and explore the 25 miles of shoreline.

Gardening enthusiasts and budding ones will enjoy a visit to Geoff Hamilton’s Barnsdale Gardens on the North Shore of Rutland Water. The Falconry Centre is close by and worth a visit.

Around Rutland Water there are many attractive stopping off points all with car parks and refreshment facilities. At Sykes Lane there is a Butterfly Farm and a rock climbing wall, at Whitwell there is a boarding point for the Rutland Belle, plus restaurant/coffee shop and at Normanton there is a Fishing Lodge with restaurant and fishing tackle shop.

Stamford offers the usual shops but also a lovely river walk and some interesting architecture, often used as a backdrop for ‘period’ dramas on TV. There are also any number of places to eat, ranging from good quality fish and chips to the upmarket George Hotel.

Oakham has a street market every Saturday selling fresh local produce and other goods. As you would expect there are also the usual range of shops and some very nice restaurants serving a range of cuisines.

Uppingham is home to the famous public school and has a lovely market square, where they hold a market every Friday, and several coffee shops to take a break from browsing the antiques and old books shops.

Further afield there is Rockingham Castle, Melton Mowbray, home of the famous pork pies and Stilton Cheese and the Nene Valley Railway at Peterborough.
